Mumbo-jumbo keyword names keep you broke

 and invisible...

Mumbo-jumbo keyword domain names:

  • Fail as business names
  • Fail as brands
  • Invite competition
  • Balloon marketing expenses
  • and fail for phone centric businesses that answer the phone to close sales

Keyword domain names have almost always failed for phone centric businesses. No one has been able to bridge the disconnect between the phone and the internet. The 'think inside the box' formula has always been to use the existing brand and/or business name and throw dollars at internet marketing SEO.

'Internet Speak' for 'We summarily dismiss your phone centric business model."

What are 1-Dash & 1-Dial Domains?

1-pizza-65px.jpg Wednesday, 05 March 08 - 10:26 PM (GMT -07:00)
By web teknia in Small Business
They are domain names that look like phone numbers. Domains are interesting investments and the industry is very innovative. The word pizza as an asset is interesting because pizza.com (the URL and website) is for sale at $1 Million dollars.

The 1-Dash Domain offering seems like a good way to market to people that want to order pizzas.

1-Dash & 1-Dial Explained

A prime example using the word 'Pizza'

1-Pizza.com   1-Dash domain
1-Pizza.mobi
1-74992.com    1-Dial domain (74992 spells Pizza on a phone keypad)
1-74992.mobi

The 1- mimics a phone number so it's a great memory trigger for people using a phone to connect to the web.

If it looks like a phone number and walks like a domain, it Quacks, "Mobile, Mobile, Mobile!!"

By web teknia in Small Business

When TeraPad's solutions aren't a fit for our 'other' websites we use hosting from site5 because it's cheap and has some great benefits included. We have existing websites that we couldn't abandon when we found the good folks here at TeraPad so we host them with site5 using a reseller account.

We can host several companies on one server and monitor their stats so that everyone gets speedy responses for page requests. Check it out!

Hosting Packages:
We have some great options for webhosting by site5 starting at $5.00 a month. This is lot better than the 'Freebie' Website tonight package that comes with your domain for a business looking to have a web-presence.

Site5 $5 Hosting Deal

The plans come with Fantastico, they're dependable and inexpensive. Fantastico is an advanced script auto-installer which allows each user to easily have a certain software on his/her web site. Currently, Fantastico can easily install a large amount of software like blogs, forums, shopping carts and photo galleries.

Fantastico includes about 50 of the most popular and widely used open source software packages. With just a few clicks of the mouse, any of the software applications included in the Fantastico system can be installed and set up on your web site and you can start using them right away.
Note: Make sure you use complex passwords of at least 11 characters when setting up your selections.

Developers:
If you are a developer and would like to become a reseller so that you can provide better service for your clients, you may be interested in the following package. <that's how we got started>

Too Cute | RSS and You

1-pizza-65px.jpg Thursday, 26 April 07 - 12:18 PM (GMT -07:00)
By web teknia in Small Business
I've noticed that our web environment has adopted 'fast food' expectations. (FWIW, I've re-named the Speedy check-out line the 'Impatient Line') We expect the info we want, delivered as we like it and summarized for us in easily digested, bite-sized chunks.

Lesson One: RSS
RSS is a way to get the web serve you, the user all the info you need, when you need it etc.

RSS in Plain English

Business people very much need to understand RSS and why it's a feature they need to implement in their web strategy. If you don't, your competitors will beat you to the punch.

Lesson Two: Too Cute
Saying too much clogs people's thought processes. Being a tekkie (closet trekkie too) enables moments when you make people's eyes glaze over. That's the last thing you want in business website content.

Being too cute can shut people off, they will leave your site and won't come back. Realtors and car salespeople struggle with this concept on the web because of their failure to list a price and they don't understand that the purpose for many is to use the web for research. People contemplate and plan their investments. Realtors and car salespeople think you will call them for a price… Right. They don't understand that people use the web to 'window shop' and distance themselves from sales people. (and no trust has been established; in fact; an inherent trickery is present because the expectation is for some usable info, not a cheesy sales pitch)

In the early days of the web and SEO, lots of realtor sites used keyword spamming (now illegal) as a method of increasing their SEV (Search Engine Visibility) They hid popular searches like the word 'sex' on their pages by making the text the same color as the page background. This technique brought two click visitors; one click to see stuff they weren't looking for and one click to get back to the business of finding sites offering content about sex.

* Illegal as judged by Google and other search engines. When discovered a site risks being de-listed. And if I may add; truly invisible; nearly impossible to recover from: banished from sight on the web.

Many SEO firms got their best results from using techniques like this and others mentioned. This resulted in SEO firms being compared to the un-trustworthy 'credit repair industry' because their techniques work for 30 days. I can't imagine that is the result you seek with your efforts to make your website visible.

TeraPad Free Blog Service Compared!!

1-pizza-65px.jpg Thursday, 26 April 07 - 11:38 AM (GMT -07:00)
By web teknia in Small Business
Is TeraPad's claim accurate?

The all-in-one content publishing platform!
Terapad does everything you'd like your personal blog or corporate site to do, and does it a lot better than your current solution - all free of charge. 2GB of storage, nothing to install and no spam, ever! Give it a try!
Pasted from <
http://www.terapad.com/>

Commentary:
Given time, Terapad could/will develop a lot of features needed to become a Premier Blogging Service for business use. It's free and will give many an introduction to publishing.

Pro:
I agree that many of the things TeraPad does are better than other blogging solutions. It is excellent for personal use right out of the chute. Two days working with it and it's great! Corporate use will require some additional features. TeraPad excels in the way it announces your posts by the multitude of 'pings' it automatically sends when posting. If your content is worthy of attention, this is huge.

Terapad does everything you'd like your personal blog or corporate site to do, and does it a lot better than your current solution - all free of charge. 2GB of storage, nothing to install and no spam, ever!

Con:
I've had a problem with Future Posting usability:
<rant> It's confusing if you aren't fluent with GMT time and don't use European date notation. I fail to see how businesses will trust that an article will be posted if the format is foreign to them.</rant>

Feature Requests:
Multiple logins so posters and/or guest writers can post with-out destroying the entire site would be a mandatory feature for many of my clients. TypePad has a guest publishing feature enabled for Authors and Junior authors (posts must be approved)

TypePad Discussion
TypePad is not free and can't be recommended for every business customer because the price for advanced site admin permissions is too expensive for most companies. This also creates a deal killer for most because to share a login can't be recommended.

TypePad has messed up their ping feature. A ping announcing your post is only sent to a couple syndicators. Manually adding Yahoo's ping receptor can be done manually but what a pain to do on every post. IMHO, Yahoo lost cred when they initiated a policy to only list business sites that pay $300.

TypePad has a track-back feature that TeraPad owners/developers don't seem to favor; mentioning Me2 commentary from others. This strikes at the heart of web content value and I tend to agree. My first blog became a searchable resource for Windows Tricks and business tips I value. I made it available by login only and turned off track-back.

TypePad has multiple blog capability and sub-blogs can be setup for login access only. These can be used for Corporate Intranets (an Intranet is usually privatea nd access I limited to emplyees and vendors)  I haven't checked if TeraPad has login  only access yet.

TypePad's Photo Album is the best available Photo Album on the Market. Period.
By using a little outside-the-box thinking, the TypePad Photo Album can become the best presentation tool your business could dream of. The problem with it is that to achieve greatness takes a lot of hand coding of links and content formatting in the Photo Album backend. Not the realm of your normal business types but definetly easier than Coppermine or some of the other PA (photo album) platforms.
Backup
TypePads PA can't be backed up from within TypePad itself. The posts can be but it backs up the text only. Businesses take on huge risks using un-proven on-line services because when and if they service fails, all the content disappears.
Business exposure to risk is an inherent part fo the process with all online offerings. Even Google Apps, an online versions of Office Applications, are vulnerable to power outages and other maladies. No one seems to be addressing sending all your staff home if the 'internet' is down.

WordPress Discussion
WordPress is a very good blogging platform that comes with many website hosting packages. Content Spam is prevalent in WordPress until you add some filtering. (Do-able but tedious)
No built in Photo Album
Lots of the templates bonk as periodic updates are applied.

Final Thoughts:
I would not have invested so much time in a startup blog service if there wasn't such great appeal. I'll bet there's more to come. It's free. Did I mention free?
My opinion is: TeraPad will quickly gain traction and become very popular.
So in conclusion; TeraPad's claim is accurate.

It's Magic | My Business is Invisible

1-pizza-65px.jpg Monday, 05 February 07 - 06:57 AM (GMT -07:00)
By web teknia in Small Business

Hi yall. We're shedding tears for ya here because we went thru it too
Registered a domain; built a website, 3 months later; NADA

Presto, Shazam our site is invisible.
It's so far down in the listing we're considering scuba gear...

So our quest here is to answer the following question:

Why is my website invisible?

Do I need SEO (Search Engine Optimization)?

Maybe some...
More importantly, you need Search Engine Visibility (SEV)

...more on that later.
